As Nigeria celebrates its 64th independence anniversary, Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, has urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s progress and shortcomings. While recognising the significance of the anniversary, Obi emphasised that this moment calls for sober reflection, especially from the nation’s leaders. He expressed concern over the persistent challenges Nigeria faces, including poverty, corruption, and insecurity, which he believes have hindered the country’s development.
A Day for Gratitude and Reflection
In his independence message, Peter Obi acknowledged the blessings Nigeria has received, including its vast natural and human resources. However, he stressed that these blessings have not been fully harnessed for the nation’s growth. “Today, we thank God for abundantly blessing us with resources to build a great nation. But this should also be a day of sober reflection,” Obi stated. He noted that while the nation has achieved milestones, the country’s leadership must examine its role in Nigeria’s stagnation.
Leaders Must Take Responsibility
Obi specifically called on Nigeria’s leaders to take responsibility for the country’s current state. He questioned whether leaders have effectively lifted people out of poverty or allowed more Nigerians to fall into it. He also highlighted the troubling statistic of over 18 million out-of-school children, stressing that the nation’s failure in education is a significant barrier to progress. “We must ask ourselves, have we made education accessible, or are we failing our children?” Obi challenged.
Nigeria’s Developmental Struggles
Peter Obi also pointed out Nigeria’s poor performance in several developmental indices. From security to economic productivity, he observed that Nigeria has fallen behind its peers. “By every measure, we are underperforming,” Obi remarked. He added that Nigeria ranks poorly in global peace and security indices and remains one of the most corrupt nations in the world. According to him, these issues are clear signs of Nigeria’s decline and the urgent need for reform.
The Call for a New and Productive Nigeria
Obi’s message focused on the need to build a “New and Productive Nigeria” that prioritises the well-being of its citizens. He argued that Nigeria must free itself from tribal and religious divisions and focus on unity and development. “Our nation must be independent from the state capture that has dragged it into failure,” he urged. Obi stressed that only through such reforms can Nigeria begin to reverse its downward trend and truly celebrate its independence.
Hope for Nigeria’s Future
Despite his concerns, Peter Obi expressed hope that Nigeria’s greatness remains possible. He called on all Nigerians, particularly the youth, to commit to building a better future. “On this day, we must make a solemn commitment to rescue Nigeria from further decay and rebuild a nation that serves all its people,” Obi concluded. His message resonated with the need for accountability, unity, and a renewed focus on national development.
