He shared his message on X, expressing gratitude for teachers’ unwavering dedication. Obi acknowledged the significant challenges educators face within Nigeria’s education sector. He emphasised the urgent need to improve their working conditions and support their efforts.

Teachers’ Role in Nation Building

Obi emphasised the critical role teachers play in shaping the intellectual and moral foundations of the nation’s youth. Peter Obi urged the government to prioritise teachers’ welfare, providing them with essential tools and support. He stressed that teachers’ contributions are crucial to society’s development. Obi warned that neglecting teachers’ needs threatens the quality of education in Nigeria.

Challenges Faced by Nigerian Educators

Referencing recent reports, Obi pointed out the severe conditions teachers face in Nigeria, including low pay and poor treatment. Peter Obi highlighted that over 30 ASUU members resigned from Sa’adu Zungur University due to poor treatment. He mentioned ASUU’s 35-day ultimatum to the government. Additionally, Obi noted that ASUP issued a 15-day ultimatum for addressing urgent, long-standing grievances.

Global and National Teacher Shortage

The former governor also highlighted the global teacher shortage, pointing out that Africa alone needs 15 million teachers to strengthen its education sector. Nigeria, he added, is facing a significant shortfall of teachers, with public primary schools lacking nearly 195,000 educators. Obi linked this shortage to the growing number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, which stands at over 18 million, stressing that resolving teachers’ welfare issues is crucial to reversing these worrying trends.
