Zambia has confirmed its first case of Mpox, as announced by the Ministry of Health on Thursday. The patient, a 32-year-old Tanzanian national, arrived in the country in early September and began exhibiting symptoms such as muscle aches, fatigue, and a sore throat by October 2. Health officials have since initiated immediate containment efforts to prevent further spread.
Patient Under Treatment, Contact Tracing Underway
The infected individual is currently receiving treatment at a rural health centre. The country’s Health Minister, Elijah Muchima, revealed that the patient had travelled extensively across Zambia, raising concerns of possible local transmission. In response, health authorities have launched widespread contact tracing to monitor and assess individuals who may have been exposed.
Increased Risk of Transmission
Given the patient’s extensive travel within Zambia, health experts have warned of an elevated risk of local transmission and potential cross-border spread. “Due to the patient’s travel history and interactions at multiple locations, there is a heightened risk of transmission,” said Muchima. Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and report any symptoms.
Ministry Heightens Surveillance Efforts
In light of the confirmed case, Zambia’s National Public Health Institute has intensified surveillance across the country. The Health Ministry has mobilised teams to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and is closely monitoring potential new cases. These efforts come in a bid to curtail the spread of the virus, which has already impacted several countries globally.
Mpox Declared Global Public Health Emergency
Mpox is a viral infection that presents flu-like symptoms and can cause skin lesions. It was declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization, marking the second time in two years. As Zambia joins the list of affected nations, officials are working swiftly to mitigate the impact on public health.
Precautionary Measures Encouraged
Zambian authorities are urging citizens to practise hygiene measures and report any unusual symptoms to healthcare providers. With the ongoing efforts to trace contacts, the Ministry of Health remains committed to preventing further outbreaks, while keeping the public informed.
