Ex-Immigration Official Highlights Porous Borders
A former Assistant Comptroller-General of Immigration, Sunday Fagbamigbe, has revealed that more than 320 border routes across Nigeria remain unmanned. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Fagbamigbe warned that these unsecured borders serve as gateways for arms trafficking, drug smuggling, and human trafficking, exacerbating the country’s insecurity crisis.
Unmanned Routes Facilitate Crime and Illegal Trade
Fagbamigbe noted that the lack of control along these border routes allows criminals to transport contraband and unwholesome goods into Nigeria. He stressed that these illegal activities contribute to rising insecurity and have severe implications for the nation’s safety and economy.
Call for Investment in Advanced Security Technologies
To address these challenges, Fagbamigbe urged the Federal Government to invest in cutting-edge technologies for border security. He recommended deploying drones, electronic sensors, night vision scopes, and artificial intelligence tools to improve surveillance. Such innovations, he argued, would enhance the capacity of security agents to detect and prevent illegal crossings more effectively.
Collaboration with Border Communities Advised
Fagbamigbe emphasised the importance of collaborating with border communities to strengthen security efforts. He encouraged security agents to engage with residents living near border areas to raise awareness and improve the monitoring of unauthorised entries. “We need serious border management efforts and active involvement from local communities,” he stated.
Security Personnel Implicated in Smuggling Operations
Meanwhile, a recent investigative report by journalist Fisayo Soyombo exposed cases of security officials aiding smuggling activities. The report highlighted how personnel from the Nigerian Customs Service were complicit in allowing illegal goods to pass through border routes, raising questions about accountability within the system.

Fagbamigbe’s comments underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to border security in Nigeria. As the nation grapples with increasing insecurity, experts and stakeholders continue to call for reforms and stronger oversight to curtail the illegal activities facilitated by unmanned border routes.
