Chevron Announces New Oil Field Discovery in Niger Delta Amid Fuel Price Hike

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has announced the discovery of a new oil field in the shallow offshore area of the Niger Delta. The Meji NW-1 well, which was spud on September 2, 2024, reached a total depth of 8,983 feet by mid-September, according to a statement by Chevron’s General Manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu.

Significant Discovery for Nigeria’s Oil Industry

The newly discovered field is expected to produce up to 17,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), adding to Nigeria’s energy reserves. Chevron’s Chairman and Managing Director, Jim Swartz, confirmed that the well encountered approximately 690 feet of hydrocarbons within Miocene sands, expanding the Meji field’s reserves. Well operations were completed by October 2, 2024, and the drilling rig has since vacated the site.

Strengthening Chevron’s Nigerian Resource Base

Oduselu highlighted that the discovery aligns with Chevron’s strategy to strengthen its Nigerian resource base, particularly in onshore and shallow water regions. The find also supports Chevron’s global exploration goals, which aim to extend the life of existing assets and deliver production with shorter development cycles.

Collaboration with Nigerian Partners

Chevron holds a 40% interest in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 49, which includes the Meji field, through a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Oduselu confirmed that Chevron would continue its partnership with NNPC to further develop Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, though specific production timelines for the new field were not disclosed.

New Field to Boost Production

Production at the Meji field peaked at 51,000 bpd in 2005 but has since declined to around 17,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). The new discovery is expected to help offset this decline and increase Nigeria’s overall output. This development comes as many international oil companies (IOCs) are shifting focus from the Niger Delta due to security challenges.
