Benin Ships Fourth Tanker of Nigerien Oil to Singapore

Niger’s Crude Oil Export Resumes Amid Growing Global Demand

Benin has successfully shipped its fourth tanker carrying Nigerien crude oil to Singapore, marking a significant step in the resumed oil exports from Niger. The tanker, Front Coral, carrying 155,000 cubic meters of crude, departed from Benin’s Sèmè port last Wednesday. This shipment is a key milestone in Niger’s journey to strengthen its oil export capacity, especially after months of halted operations.

Overcoming Delays and Challenges

Despite facing adverse weather conditions on October 12 that delayed the departure, the tanker’s loading process was completed without any major incidents. The shipment highlights the resilience of Niger and Benin’s partnership in ensuring that their energy supply chain remains functional, overcoming logistical challenges.

Niger’s Expanding Role in Global Energy Supply

This latest tanker is the fourth in a series of shipments to Asia since Niger resumed its oil exports through Benin, solidifying its growing role in the international energy market. The lifting of restrictions earlier this year has enabled Niger to position itself as a crucial supplier of crude oil to the Asian market, particularly Singapore.

Strengthening Economic Ties

The resumption of these exports is a reflection of the strengthening economic ties between Niger and Benin, especially in the energy sector. The two West African countries have found common ground in improving their trade routes, leading to boosted local economies and facilitating the energy demands of regions as far as Singapore.

Significance of the Pipeline Connection

A pivotal factor in the resumption of oil exports was the resolution of the political dispute that had previously blocked the Chinese-funded pipeline. Stretching nearly 2,000 kilometres from Niger’s Agadem oilfield to the Benin coast, the pipeline is essential for Niger’s oil industry, enabling the export of crude to global markets.
