Super Eagles Climb in FIFA Rankings
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up three spots in the latest FIFA men’s rankings, securing the 36th position globally. This jump follows their recent 1-0 victory over Libya in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match earlier this month. Nigeria’s improved standing reflects the team’s solid performance under interim management.
Nigeria Rises in African Football
In addition to their global rise, the Super Eagles have also advanced in Africa’s continental rankings, moving two places to become the fourth-best team on the continent. Morocco continues to hold the top spot as Africa’s highest-ranked team, while Argentina retains its global number one position in the FIFA rankings.
Victory Over Libya Boosts Nigeria’s Standing
Nigeria’s crucial win over Libya contributed significantly to their improved FIFA ranking. The October update saw Nigeria gain 5.27 points, placing them higher on the international football stage. The Super Eagles are now looking ahead to further solidify their position as they prepare for upcoming AFCON matches.
Super Falcons Hold Steady
While the Super Eagles gained ground, Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons, maintained their global position. The Super Falcons remain ranked 36th worldwide and continue to dominate African women’s football, holding onto their number one spot on the continent. FIFA’s next rankings update is expected in November 2024.
Libyan Controversy Clouds AFCON Qualifiers
It will be recalled that the Super Eagles recently withdrew from their scheduled AFCON qualifier against Libya due to logistical issues. The team was stranded at a Libyan airport for over 12 hours, prompting Nigeria’s decision to abandon the match. The Libyan Football Federation condemned the move, and legal action may follow.
CAF Investigates the Incident
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into the Super Eagles’ withdrawal from the match. CAF’s Disciplinary Board is expected to issue a ruling soon, addressing the concerns raised by both Nigeria and Libya. The decision could impact Nigeria’s future AFCON qualification path.
