Iran Condemns Israeli Strikes on Military Bases
Following Israel’s overnight airstrikes, which targeted military sites in Tehran and killed two Iranian soldiers, Iran has condemned the assault, calling it a “clear violation of international law.” The Iranian Foreign Ministry declared Iran’s right to defend itself against what it views as “acts of aggression,” referencing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Tehran’s statement reinforces the possibility of a retaliatory action against Israel, raising fears of escalation.
Military Facilities Targeted in Tehran
Israeli fighter jets reportedly launched precise strikes on Iranian military installations, focusing on missile manufacturing and launch facilities. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the strikes hit key areas in Tehran’s western and southwestern regions. The Iranian military claimed to have countered Israel’s offensive effectively, though it admitted to “limited damage” in some areas.
Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Strong Response
The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s actions, labelling them as violations of Iran’s sovereignty. Spokespersons stressed that Iran would take all measures necessary to protect its security. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian emphasized Iran’s position, warning that any further aggression would meet with a proportional response, heightening anticipation of a potential counterattack.
Revolutionary Guard Expresses Defiance
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a powerful arm of Iran’s military, vowed to protect Iranian territory and its people, denouncing Israel’s strikes as “criminal actions.” The IRGC noted its readiness to confront any further assaults, claiming that Israel’s strikes would not weaken Iran’s commitment to defending its military interests. This stance highlights the IRGC’s readiness to escalate if further provocations arise.
Global Calls for Restraint and Diplomacy
International reaction to the strikes has been swift, with countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE calling for restraint on both sides. While Russia expressed concern about rising tensions in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia urged both Iran and Israel to avoid escalation and adhere to international laws. Western nations, including the United States, acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defence but discouraged Iran from retaliating.
A Tense Standoff Amid Heightened Regional Tensions
The airstrikes and Iran’s condemnation have intensified the standoff between these regional rivals, with military analysts speculating on the potential for further conflict. As both countries bolster their defences, international observers warn that continued military actions could destabilise the region, affecting broader Middle Eastern security and diplomatic relations.
