Aguocha’s Visit to Nnamdi Kanu
Hon. Obi Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South in Abia State, visited detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, pushing for political solutions to Kanu’s prolonged detention. The visit on October 24 was part of Aguocha’s efforts to address Kanu’s legal challenges and ensure his legal team has unhindered access, following concerns raised by Kanu’s lawyers.
Lawyers’ Access Restored
Kanu’s legal team had reached out to Aguocha, citing difficulties in meeting with their client. Acting swiftly, Aguocha wrote to the Department of State Security (DSS) and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, requesting immediate intervention. Following these efforts, Aguocha met with Kanu, discussing the restrictions and updates with Kanu and his family member, Ms. Ezioma Stella Ikpo, who accompanied him.
DSS Clarifies Access Issues
In response, the DSS explained that the restrictions stemmed from ongoing legal proceedings, specifically a request by Kanu’s lawyers for a judge’s recusal, which required further legal process. However, Aguocha’s intervention led to a resolution allowing the legal team access, marking a positive turn in the case.
Health Needs Addressed
The DSS also assured that Kanu’s medical requirements are being met, with the recent provision of private medical care. Kanu reportedly received medical attention on October 3, addressing long-standing health concerns raised by his supporters and family.
Speaker’s Role in Intervention Praised
Aguocha acknowledged Speaker Tajudeen Abbas’s crucial role in facilitating access, expressing appreciation for the Speaker’s quick intervention. He commended the DSS’s improved responsiveness under its new leadership in addressing Kanu’s healthcare and legal needs.
Hope for a Political Solution
Aguocha remains hopeful for a political resolution, underscoring the need for peace and stability in the South-East. Emphasising Kanu’s human rights as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, Aguocha believes a political solution could pave the way for reconciliation and stability in the region.
