New Terrorist Group ‘Lukarawas’ Emerges in Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters of Nigeria has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group called ‘Lukarawas’ operating in the northwestern region. Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja, raising alarms over the escalating security threats in the area.

Origins Linked to Niger’s Recent Coup

Maj. Gen. Buba indicated that the group originated from the Republic of Niger, particularly following the recent coup that disrupted military collaboration between Nigeria and Niger. This political instability has allowed terrorists to infiltrate northern regions, particularly Sokoto and Kebbi States, taking advantage of weakened border security.

Gaps in Security Cooperation

According to Buba, joint border operations with Nigerien forces had previously kept terrorists at bay, but the coup created gaps in cooperation that the group exploited. The newly formed terrorist organization has taken advantage of difficult terrains to make incursions into remote areas of northwestern Nigeria, spreading their dangerous ideology among local populations.

Local Reception and Military Response

Initially, locals welcomed the group, believing they had good intentions. However, their presence went unreported to military and security agencies, complicating the response efforts. In light of these developments, the Defence Headquarters assured that troops are maintaining Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations to counteract the group’s activities.

Police Confirm Terrorist Activity

The Nigerian Police Force, specifically the Sokoto State Command, has corroborated the presence of the Lukarawas sect in approximately five local government areas, including Gudu and Tangaza. The police reported that the group is armed with sophisticated weaponry and is imposing its beliefs on the communities.

The Defence Headquarters emphasized that despite the challenges posed by the Lukarawas group, military forces are working diligently to locate and neutralize the threat. They are committed to restoring security and stability in the region, ensuring that the local population is protected from the rising tide of terrorism. The situation remains critical as authorities continue to address the implications of this new terrorist faction.
