Violence Mars Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Visit to Amsterdam
Tensions surged in Amsterdam on Thursday night as violent antisemitic attacks targeted Israeli football fans in the city. Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters faced violent attacks in Amsterdam while visiting for a Europa League match against Ajax. Authorities reported street assaults on fans and further attempts to break into their hotels. Police arrested at least 57 individuals involved in the attacks.
Dutch and Israeli Leaders Voice Condemnation
In the aftermath, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed horror over the incidents, calling them “completely unacceptable” in a statement shared on social media. He stated that his office was coordinating with Israeli officials to ensure accountability for those involved in the attacks. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also responded, describing the violence as a “pogrom,” while calling for heightened security for Jewish communities in Amsterdam.
Netanyahu Dispatches Planes to Evacuate Israelis
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident a “planned antisemitic attack” in discussions with Dutch leaders. Netanyahu urged Dutch authorities to strengthen protections for Israelis in the Netherlands. He also announced that rescue planes would be sent to bring home injured citizens and affected individuals.
Social Media Highlights Tensions and Violence
Images and videos from the chaotic night circulated widely online, showing clashes between Maccabi fans and groups of locals. In one widely shared clip, individuals appear to tear down a Palestinian flag, an act which intensified tensions. Social media footage also shows police forming a cordon around Maccabi supporters to maintain order following the match, as pro-Palestinian protesters gathered at various locations.
Broader Security Efforts Called for by Israeli Officials
Netanyahu emphasised the need for secure environments for Israelis abroad, urging Dutch authorities to enhance protection for visitors and the Jewish community. The Israeli government pledged to bring back affected fans to ensure their safety. Rising concerns over antisemitic violence in European cities have prompted these urgent protective measures.
Investigation and Security Ramp-Up Underway
In a response to rising safety concerns, Dutch authorities pledged a full investigation into the violence, with police remaining on high alert. The commitment from Dutch leaders to track and prosecute those responsible underscores the need for a heightened security presence to prevent future incidents of violence against visitors.
