Governor Otti Announces Major Debt Clearance
Governor Alex Otti announced his administration cleared N90 billion of Abia State’s inherited N191 billion debt since May 2023. This reduction, achieved without loans, resulted from stringent resource management. The funds supported progress in infrastructure, staff salaries, and pension payments.
Record-Breaking Foreign Investment Inflows
Governor Otti reported Abia’s foreign direct investment rose significantly, reaching $159 million between June 2023 and June 2024. This increase elevated Abia from 27th to 3rd in Nigeria’s investment rankings. He attributes this achievement to improved infrastructure and a business-friendly environment. Investors from Italy, Turkey, and the United States have shown a growing interest in the state.
Focus on Agricultural Modernisation
Governor Otti’s administration funded 300 Abians for advanced agricultural training in Nasarawa State to strengthen the agricultural base. He also established the Greater Ohafia Development Commission to support balanced district development. This commission complements existing development agencies in Aba and Umuahia.
Infrastructure Projects in Full Swing
Addressing Abia’s infrastructure needs, Otti detailed ongoing projects, particularly the expansion of the Onuimo Bridge-Abia Tower road. He also noted that the Port Harcourt Road project in Aba, under the supervision of Julius Berger, is expected to be completed by February 2025, enhancing regional connectivity and boosting economic prospects.
Allegations of Financial Mismanagement
Governor Otti criticised his predecessor, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, over alleged financial mismanagement, highlighting a contentious N10 billion allocation supposedly meant for an airport project. An audit by KPMG revealed the funds were redirected through multiple accounts, sparking outrage. The former administration initially denied the misuse but later claimed the funds went towards road improvements. Otti has demanded either the airport project be completed or the money returned to the state’s coffers.
Strategic Vision for Abia’s Future
Governor Otti remains steadfast in his commitment to transforming Abia State’s economy. His strategic approach, blending resource management, investment growth, and infrastructure improvements, aims to position Abia as a hub of economic opportunity, ensuring balanced development across all districts and tackling inherited challenges with transparency.
