Kwara Restricts Vehicles on Government House Road

New Vehicle Restrictions Announced for Government House Road

The Kwara State Government has imposed new restrictions on Ahmadu Bello Way in Ilorin, banning various types of commercial vehicles. The state Ministry of Works and Transport issued this notice on Friday, directing immediate enforcement through the Kwara State Traffic Management Agency (KWARTMA).

Vehicles Banned from Key Route

The banned vehicles include tricycles (popularly known as Keke Napep), motorcycles, taxi cabs, and heavy-duty trucks. According to the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Abdulquawiy Olododo, this decision aims to enhance safety on the newly rehabilitated road, which connects key areas in Ilorin.

Violators Face Fines for Non-Compliance

Olododo stated that violators of the restriction could face fines of up to N50,000.He said, “We are already installing restriction signs along Ahmadu Bello Way,” and added that the road’s location near Government House necessitates restricted access for specific vehicles.

Additional Measures to Ensure Traffic Safety

KWARTMA’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Bamidele Michael, confirmed the agency’s readiness to enforce the new directives. He explained that the move complements existing “No Parking” policies and aims to improve traffic safety and road security.

Traders Advised Against Using Pedestrian Walkways

The commissioner urged traders to avoid conducting business on walkways, which are reserved for pedestrians. He listed areas like Ojaoba, Gambari, and Emir’s Road among those requiring compliance, noting the dangers posed by road encroachment.

Public Cooperation Essential for Success

Olododo also highlighted the growing problem of one-way driving on the road, warning that offenders will face legal penalties. He encouraged residents to cooperate with the state government’s measures to create a safer, more orderly road environment for everyone.
