New Terror Group: Army Targets Group Amid Rising Threat

Oluyede Takes Charge as Acting Chief of Army Staff

Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede has initiated decisive actions to combat the Lukarawa terror group threatening Sokoto and Kebbi states. On Sunday, he visited the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto to rally his troops. He urged them to increase efforts to neutralise Lukarawa, which is reportedly luring local youths with financial incentives.

Lukarawa’s Foreign Links Raise Security Alarms

Defence Headquarters recently confirmed Lukarawa’s connection to extremist factions in Mali and Niger, raising regional security concerns. Maj. Gen. Edward Buba explained Lukarawa’s rise stems from political instability in nearby countries. This instability fuels the spread of militant activities across Nigeria’s northwestern borders.

Community Cooperation Vital, Says Oluyede

Oluyede assessed his troops’ readiness in Tangaza Local Government Area and urged residents to support the military with accurate intelligence. He emphasised the importance of community cooperation, calling on Nigerians to contribute. “We need the support of Nigerians to ensure economic stability,” he stated. Oluyede encouraged the community to unite with security forces for the country’s safety.

Army to Transform Shanties into Military Posts

As part of a broader security strategy, Oluyede announced plans to repurpose certain rural settlements as military observation posts to monitor Lukarawa’s activities closely. Troops from Operation Fasan Yamma have been deployed to reinforce security and conduct clearance operations in affected areas. Army officials confirm that Lukarawa’s camps, which were previously set up near community centres, will be targeted for dismantlement.

Residents Recall Group’s Troubling History

Local residents report feeling Lukarawa’s presence since 2018, with the group imposing levies and enforcing strict conduct rules. Initially, Lukarawa gained support by countering bandit attacks in the area. However, they later adopted extremist practices, using violent punishments against those who resisted. Their encampments are reportedly just six kilometres from Gidan Madi in Tangaza.

Regional Collaboration in Counter-Terrorism Efforts

In response to this growing threat, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has called on federal agencies to collaborate in curbing Lukarawa’s influence. He recently dispatched a delegation to meet with Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa to request heightened security measures. The Nigerian Air Force has already launched air strikes targeting Lukarawa’s strongholds, delivering a major blow to the group’s operational capabilities.
