Constitution Reform Essential for Nigeria’s Progress, Says Anyaoku
Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, stressed that Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution hinders the country’s ability to achieve lasting progress. Speaking on Wednesday, he argued that unless the constitution is replaced, even the most capable leaders would struggle to address Nigeria’s economic and social issues.
The Need for Federalism
Anyaoku emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity requires a true federal structure to manage its varied cultural and regional complexities. He referenced countries like India, Canada, and Switzerland, which successfully address pluralism through federal constitutions, suggesting a similar approach for Nigeria to ensure unity and stability.
Addressing Deep-Rooted Issues
“Not even Angel Gabriel could tackle Nigeria’s challenges under the current constitution,” Anyaoku remarked. He highlighted the need for a system that enables effective governance, addresses economic stagnation, and combats corruption. He suggested that without constitutional reform, tackling Nigeria’s pervasive challenges would remain elusive.
Anyaoku’s Call at Osuntokun’s Biography Launch
Anyaoku’s comments came during the launch of The Noble Academic and Patriot, a biography of Professor Akinjide Osuntokun, held in Lagos. Serving as chairman of the event, Anyaoku praised Osuntokun as a dedicated academic and patriot who contributed to Nigeria’s progress on the global stage, particularly in supporting his own bid for Commonwealth Secretary-General.

The event was attended by distinguished Nigerians, including former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who reviewed the book. Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also highlighted Osuntokun’s influence, decrying Nigeria’s tendency to neglect those who genuinely contribute to national development. The gathering reflected a celebration of intellectual contributions to Nigeria’s growth amidst calls for lasting political reform.
