Rising Costs Reshape Daily Life in Enugu and Jos
The escalating cost of living in Nigeria is leaving many citizens struggling to make ends meet, with basic needs such as food, fuel, and rent becoming increasingly unaffordable. Across cities like Enugu and Jos, residents are adjusting their lifestyles in uncomfortable ways to survive. From trekking long distances to cutting back on meals, Nigerians are finding it harder to cope with the rising prices.
Enugu Residents Share Hardship Stories
In Enugu, the impact is deeply personal. Ogbonna Ngozichi, a University of Nigeria Nsukka graduate, revealed she still lives with her parents because she cannot afford rent. “I should have left my father’s house by now, but the cost of rent has grown ridiculously,” she said. Rising fuel prices have also forced her to endure frequent power outages. “Sleeping in darkness because fuel is ₦1300? How did we go from ₦160 to ₦1300?” she lamented.
Similarly, students like 21-year-old Ekoh Vivian are making sacrifices. “I’d rather stay home than hang out with friends because transport costs are too high,” she shared. Her family now opts for cheaper beef instead of chicken to manage their budget.
Jos Residents Adjust to Harsh Realities
The story is the same in Jos, Plateau State. Residents are cutting back on “luxuries” just to get by. Charles Abaka explained, “I budget my feeding, avoid unnecessary movements, and trek whenever possible.” Journalist Joseph Gilbert echoed this sentiment, saying he has switched to less expensive alternatives to sustain himself.
For families, the sacrifices are even more pronounced. Gavou, a wife and mother, described her struggle to manage household expenses. “Salaries can no longer cover bills. Food that used to last a month now barely covers two weeks. Prices are outrageous,” she said, adding that she is worried about how Christmas will unfold.
Small Businesses Feel the Strain
Entrepreneurs are also facing challenges. Bliss Agumadu, a hairdresser, shared that braiding services are no longer profitable due to high costs. Clients resist price hikes, forcing her to turn down jobs. “How will I charge something that can’t feed me?” she asked.
A Grim Outlook for the Festive Season
The rising cost of living is not just affecting individuals but entire communities. The collective frustration and anxiety about the future are palpable. With incomes stagnant and prices climbing, many wonder how they will manage basic needs, let alone festive celebrations.
As Nigerians grapple with these economic hardships, the government’s role in addressing inflation and providing relief remains a critical focus. For now, residents of Enugu, Jos, and beyond continue to adapt to the harsh realities, sacrificing comfort and security in their quest to survive.
