Three Farmers Killed in Renewed Herdsmen Attacks in Enugu
Three farmers were confirmed dead on Friday morning in Mgbuji, Eha-Amufu, Enugu, in suspected attacks by armed herdsmen. The killings have caused fear and outrage in the region, where violent clashes between farmers and herders have been escalating in recent years. The brutal attacks injured several others.
Gruesome Scenes of Violence in the Farmlands
Local media footage showed one victim slaughtered on his rice farm, lying beside a basket of freshly harvested cassava. The disturbing images highlight the sheer brutality of the attacks, with the victims seemingly targeted for working on their farms. These killings come amid ongoing tensions between farming communities and suspected herdsmen over land use and cattle grazing rights.
A History of Violence in Eha-Amufu
This latest attack follows a series of similar incidents in the region. Between 2019 and 2022, Eha-Amufu witnessed over 20 farm settlements destroyed by suspected herdsmen, resulting in the deaths of at least 123 people. The persistent violence has forced many farmers to abandon their fields, leading to a significant loss in agricultural productivity. The community is trapped in a cycle of fear, with many residents questioning the security measures in place.
Community Leaders Demand Urgent Intervention
Ogenyi Odoh, a community leader in Eha-Amufu, condemned the attacks and appealed for immediate government intervention. He described the killings as “savagery” and lamented the failure of security forces to protect the vulnerable farming communities. Odoh said these people were just working when attacked and urged authorities to take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed.
Security Forces and Vigilantes Overwhelmed
The Nigerian military previously deployed soldiers to the region, but violence worsened after their withdrawal. Local vigilante groups, poorly equipped, struggle against armed herders carrying AK-47 rifles. The community leader expressed concern about the inadequate security presence, noting only a few soldiers are stationed in the area.
Challenges in Medical Treatment and Healthcare Access
The brutality of the attacks is also taking a toll on the region’s healthcare system. One victim, severely injured, was turned away from Parklane Hospital due to his severe wounds and high treatment costs. Medical professionals are attempting to save him at a private hospital, but reports say his family must pay N3 million for treatment, worsening their hardships.
