Ghana’s Historic Railway Inauguration
On November 22, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan railway, marking the Ghana-Burkina Faso project’s first phase. This transformative infrastructure project will grant Burkina Faso access to the sea via Ghana’s ports, revolutionizing transportation.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Tema Harbour, celebrated the completion of Ghana’s first-ever standard gauge railway. The project, which cost $447 million, was funded through a credit facility from the Indian government via Exim Bank. The new line promises to significantly reduce transportation costs and improve trade flows, positioning Ghana as a crucial trade gateway in West Africa.
A Multimodal Transportation System for Ghana
In addition to connecting Ghana to Burkina Faso, the Tema-Mpakadan railway forms part of Ghana’s broader multimodal transport system. The system integrates rail, road, and inland water transport, linking Tema Port with Buipe Port via the Volta Lake.
