Dr. Stephen Amoah, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, allegedly drew a pistol during a confrontation with youths on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred after the youths confronted the MP for failing to honor a pledge he had made. According to local news outlet 3news, Amoah had promised to give GHS 5,000 to a group after an event but did not fulfill the commitment, prompting the youths to accost him.
Verbal Exchange Escalates to Gun Threat
The altercation reportedly escalated when one of the youths pointed a toy gun at Amoah during a heated verbal exchange. In response, the MP retreated to his car and retrieved a real gun, causing a commotion. One eyewitness claimed that the confrontation began when Amoah advised the youth against using drugs, which some youths took as a provocation, further intensifying the situation.
MP Claims Self-Defense in Confrontation
Amoah later confirmed the incident, defending his actions as a reaction to an imminent threat. In a statement to 3news, he explained that he felt his life was in danger and acted to defend himself. He likened his response to the actions anyone would take if they were confronted with a weapon, referencing the biblical story of self-defense.
Rising Concerns Over Toy Gun Usage in Ghana
The incident has brought attention to a growing issue in Ghana— the use of toy guns in confrontational situations. Authorities have flagged this as a criminal offense, and the police have arrested 26 individuals this year for possessing and using toy guns illegally. A second eyewitness claimed that the disagreement initially arose when Amoah advised the youths against drug use, leading some individuals to challenge his statements. They raised concerns about an unfulfilled Astro turf project, which seemed to add fuel to the fire. The situation quickly turned chaotic, culminating in the dangerous exchange between the youths and the MP.
