This initiative comes in contrast to Malaysia’s recent decision to phase out CNG vehicles due to safety concerns. Nigeria is intensifying efforts to adopt CNG as a cost-effective alternative to petrol, following the removal of subsidies. The government views CNG as essential for Nigeria’s energy future. The delegation’s visit seeks to showcase how CNG can benefit the country.
Presidential Initiative Secures Significant Investment
Under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), the Nigerian government has attracted over $200 million in investments. This funding is set to establish 1,000 CNG conversion centers across the country. Despite efforts to promote CNG adoption, public skepticism remains, especially after a recent explosion at a NIPCO station. The explosion in Benin City injured several people, raising safety concerns about Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure. These incidents have fueled doubts about the safety and reliability of the country’s CNG systems.

The delegation, supported by Femadec Energy and Rolling Energy, will visit CNG conversion centers, refueling stations, and more. Toyin Subair, Vice Chairman of PCNGI, aims to involve Nigerians in the country’s energy transformation through this mission. He highlighted the need to address doubts about Nigeria’s natural gas potential, fueled by political interests. Subair hopes the trip will build confidence in Nigeria’s efforts to become more energy-competitive by showcasing India’s CNG system.
