First Census in Nearly Two Decades
The Federal Government has announced plans to conduct Nigeria’s next population and housing census in 2025. This will be the first census since 2006, breaking an 18-year gap despite United Nations recommendations for a 10-year interval. The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, revealed this during the 2024 anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on Population and Development held in Abuja.
Commitment to Reliable Data
Kwarra emphasised the government’s commitment to conducting a reliable census next year, highlighting its importance for informed decision-making. “A delay in conducting a census hampers effective resource allocation and policy planning,” he stated. The proposed census aims to provide accurate data to address critical issues affecting rural and underserved communities.
Previous Delays Under Buhari
Former President Muhammadu Buhari postponed the 2023 census to allow the incoming administration to take ownership of the process.
The NPC chairman stated that this delay negatively affected Nigeria’s capacity to address gender-based violence effectively.
He further highlighted that postponements hinder progress in advancing sexual and reproductive health rights nationwide.
Advancing Social and Economic Justice
Kwarra stressed that an accurate census is essential for promoting social and economic justice. He noted, “When individuals lack access to choices about their health and lives, their potential is limited, affecting society as a whole.” The exercise is expected to play a critical role in fostering inclusivity and empowering underserved populations, especially women and youth.
Advocacy for Collaboration
At the event, Toyin Saraki, founder of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, pledged continued advocacy and policy support for the census and broader development initiatives. She called on private and philanthropic stakeholders to collaborate in accelerating progress toward achieving the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development.
A New Direction for Nigeria
The 2025 census represents a significant step in addressing Nigeria’s data deficit. By ensuring accurate demographic information, the government aims to enhance resource distribution and improve the effectiveness of policies targeting economic and social development.
