Suspension Lifted After Election
The Edo State Government has lifted the suspension placed on its security outfit, now renamed the Edo State Security Corps. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, imposed the suspension in September 2024 ahead of the gubernatorial elections. This reinstatement, announced on Friday, marks a strategic step toward strengthening the state’s security infrastructure.
Governor’s Commitment to Safety
Governor Monday Okpebholo emphasised that the reinstatement reflects the government’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of Edo State’s citizens. Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary, clarified that the government implemented the suspension to comply with constitutional provisions assigning election security responsibilities to the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
Transition and Deployment
Following the successful conclusion of the gubernatorial elections, the Edo government deemed it necessary to reinstate the security outfit. All officers are directed to report to the State Commander or their respective zonal offices for redeployment. This move aims to ensure a smooth transition and optimal functioning of the security corps.
New Framework for Operations
The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikilor, highlighted the administration’s commitment to enhanced safety measures. The Edo State Security Corps will work closely with state and federal agencies to combat security challenges effectively.
Addressing Community Concerns
The reinstatement of the security outfit has been welcomed by local communities, who see it as a critical step in addressing rising security issues. By deploying resources strategically and fostering collaboration, the state government aims to build a robust security framework.
