Zulum Advocates for Caution
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has voiced strong concerns over the proposed tax reform bills currently under review. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Zulum argued that the legislation disproportionately benefits Lagos State while potentially harming other regions, including the North. He emphasised the need for deeper consultation, warning that rushing the bills into law could have adverse economic effects.
Northern Governors Oppose the Reforms
Zulum clarified that his stance is not an attack on President Bola Tinubu’s administration but a call for fairness. He revealed that many Northern governors have analysed the potential impact and concluded that the reforms favour Lagos at the expense of other states. “We are not opposing for the sake of opposition; this is about ensuring equitable growth across Nigeria,” Zulum stated.
Call for Broader Consultation
The governor urged the Federal Government to pause the legislation to allow further consultation with stakeholders. He highlighted that economic analyses show other regions, including the Southeast and South-South, would also be negatively impacted. “This is democracy; rushing these reforms without consultation undermines the process,” he said.
Atiku Advocates Transparency
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined the debate, calling for greater transparency in the review process. He emphasised that tax reforms must address the economic needs of all Nigerians, not just a select few. Atiku suggested that collaboration between the Federal Government and state governors could result in a more inclusive approach.
Critics Question Urgency of the Bills
Zulum questioned the urgency behind the reforms, noting that Lagos State itself has expressed concerns about potential losses. “If Lagos says it might lose from this, why are we rushing? Let’s take our time and do it right,” he asserted. He called for a balanced approach that would support all regions without creating economic disparities.
Stakeholders Demand Equitable Policies
As debates over the tax reform bills continue, stakeholders across Nigeria are demanding policies that promote economic equity. Zulum and other leaders are urging the Federal Government to ensure that reforms benefit all Nigerians, not just one region. The debate underscores the need for collaboration and transparency in shaping Nigeria’s economic future.
