Nigerian Ex-Servicemen Protest Over Unpaid Entitlements

Frustration Over Delayed Payments

Military retirees across Nigeria have announced plans to stage a massive protest in Abuja over unpaid entitlements. The ex-servicemen, who have been waiting for over 11 months for their benefits, expressed frustration with the Federal Ministry of Finance for failing to provide the required cash-backing, despite securing approval for the payments. Retired Colonel Innocent Azubuike, a prominent leader of the group, described the situation as a severe hardship for many retirees.

Broken Promises Fuel Anger

Azubuike stated that officials assured ex-servicemen their payments would be settled in November. However, delays arose due to unresolved financial issues. He explained that approval was granted, but the lack of cash-backing left them in uncertainty. Azubuike clarified that the problem stems from the Ministry of Finance, not the Ministry of Defence.

Retirees Take Matters Into Their Hands

Determined to bring attention to their plight, the retirees are mobilising for a large-scale protest. Azubuike emphasised that the demonstration aims to reclaim their rights and draw attention to the sacrifices they made for the nation. “We must take our fate into our hands. We have served this country patriotically and deserve better treatment,” he stated.

Preparations Underway for Protest

Organisers revealed that preparations for the protest are in full swing, with participants arriving in Abuja from various parts of the country. Mobile toilets and sleeping mats have been arranged to accommodate the retirees throughout the demonstration. Azubuike promised a peaceful but impactful protest to highlight their demands.

Demand for Urgent Action

The group has called on the Federal Government to urgently address the issue and prevent further suffering among retirees. They stressed that the nation has the resources to meet their entitlements, urging officials to prioritise their welfare. “We are not asking for charity but for what is rightfully ours,” Azubuike declared.
