Edo NLC Office Invasion: President Warns Okpebholo

Labour Leader Invasion

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has issued a strong warning to the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, following the invasion of the state’s NLC office by security operatives. The union expressed its outrage over the incident, describing it as a violation of its rights and an attack on democratic values.

Union Alleges Police Involvement

In a statement, the NLC condemned what it termed the “illegal breaking in and entry” by the Edo State Police Command. The union hinted at speculations that the security action might have been sanctioned by Governor Okpebholo. This development has raised concerns about the autonomy of labour unions and their ability to operate without interference.

Demand for Apology

Ajaero emphasised that whether the police acted independently or under instructions, the NLC demands a formal apology. He decried any form of intimidation targeted at trade unions or their leaders, stating such acts undermine human and trade union rights. Ajaero further highlighted that actions like this threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

Governor Urged to Prioritise Governance

Addressing the governor directly, Ajaero advised him to avoid conflicts with the labour movement, especially as he recently assumed office. “A brand-new governor should focus on his priorities. Harassing trade union leaders should not be one of them,” he cautioned.

Call for Police Neutrality

The NLC president also called on the police to maintain professionalism and avoid being used for “dirty jobs.” He urged the authorities to respect their oath of office and refrain from actions that could tarnish their integrity. “Leave the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress alone,” Ajaero warned.
