CDS Dismisses Claims
General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, debunked claims that Nigeria agreed to host a foreign military base. On Friday, Musa addressed the issue at the unveiling of the Armed Forces of Nigeria 2025 Tattoo Logo in Abuja. He emphasised that President Bola Tinubu’s recent trip to France did not involve such agreements. Musa clarified that the visit focused solely on trade, cultural, and economic partnerships, not military arrangements.
Focus on Economic Partnerships
General Musa stated that President Tinubu’s discussions in France focused on trade, cultural, and economic ties without military arrangements. He explained that the agreements signed aimed to foster cooperation in trade, culture, tradition, and economic development. Musa emphasised that none of the agreements included provisions for establishing foreign military bases in Nigeria.
Sovereignty Stands Firm
Reiterating the government’s commitment to sovereignty, Musa declared that Nigeria would not permit any foreign entity to establish a military presence within its borders. “The president is very clear on this matter. Protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty remains a top priority,” he said, assuring citizens that no part of the country would accommodate foreign military installations.
Collaborative Training, Not Bases
While confirming Nigeria’s ongoing collaborations with other nations, the Defence Chief noted that joint training programs and officer exchange initiatives are common practices in international military cooperation. However, he maintained that these partnerships do not equate to granting permission for foreign bases.
Clarifying Misinformation
General Musa used the platform to address growing speculation and set the record straight. “This is an opportunity to dispel any misinformation. The president remains steadfast in his resolve to uphold Nigeria’s independence and territorial integrity,” he added.
Future Outlook
The clarification from the Chief of Defence Staff reassures Nigerians of the government’s stance on sovereignty and its focus on partnerships that prioritise national interests. The Armed Forces remain committed to maintaining the integrity and security of the nation.
