Military Retirees’ Protest: FG Yields, Pays Benefits

Protests Lead to Action

The Federal Government has commenced payments of outstanding benefits to retired military personnel following widespread protests. Frustrated by months of unmet promises, the retirees had staged a demonstration at the Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Thursday, demanding immediate disbursement of their entitlements. The protests, marked by canopies, chairs, and sleeping mats, signalled their determination to secure long-overdue payments.

Retirees’ Demands Addressed

The retired personnel highlighted several grievances, including unpaid palliatives from October 2023 to November 2024 and the Security Debarment Allowance. They also sought a refund of pension deductions from medically boarded soldiers and a salary increment of N32,000 to be added to their pensions. These demands underscored the retirees’ struggle for financial justice after years of service.

Entitlement Payments Begin

Reports confirmed that some of the retirees have begun receiving their payments. Abiodun Durowaiye-Herbert, Chairman of the Retired Members of Nigerian Armed Forces Board of Trustees, verified the disbursement of funds. “We have started receiving our benefits, which is why the protest did not continue today,” he stated.

Government’s Response

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, praised President Bola Tinubu for prioritising the welfare of military personnel, both active and retired. He assured that the payment of pension arrears would remain a critical focus. The Ministry of Defence also confirmed that the three-month salary increase for military personnel had begun reflecting in their accounts.

Significance of the Protests

The retirees’ persistent protests appear to have expedited the government’s response, bringing attention to long-neglected issues. Their actions serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and prompt action in addressing the welfare of those who have served the nation.
