FG Confirms Absence of COVID-19 XEC Variant in Nigeria

No Evidence of XEC Variant

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare confirmed that Nigeria has not detected the COVID-19 XEC variant. This clarification follows widespread speculation and misinformation about a resurgence of the virus in the country. Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, made the announcement in a press release issued on Friday.

Rumours Dispelled

Balogun urged Nigerians to disregard false claims circulating online, referencing a letter with the identifier DHS/INSPDIV/017/VOL1/46, which incorrectly suggested the presence of the variant. He stated that no evidence of the COVID-19 XEC variant exists in Nigeria and encouraged citizens to remain calm while adhering to preventive health measures.

Government Preparedness Measures

The Federal Government has strengthened its readiness by upgrading Federal Tertiary Hospitals with molecular laboratories, isolation centres, and intensive care units. Additionally, border entry points have been equipped to detect and manage any potential cases of emerging COVID-19 variants. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to public health.

Advisory for Public Hygiene

The ministry advised Nigerians to maintain universal health precautions, including regular hand washing and personal hygiene, to mitigate risks. “Citizens should prioritise hygiene and preventive practices while continuing their daily activities without disruption,” Balogun emphasised.

Global Monitoring of XEC Variant

Globally, the XEC variant, a sublineage of the Omicron strain, has been reported in 43 countries, including Europe, Asia, and North America. Africa has recorded one case in Botswana, traced to a European traveller. The Africa CDC has called for enhanced surveillance to track the spread of this variant.

Call for Vigilance, Not Panic

The health ministry reassured Nigerians that proactive measures are in place to address any potential risks. “This announcement is a call for vigilance, not alarm,” the statement concluded, reiterating the government’s dedication to safeguarding public health.
