Otti Approves Reconstruction of Omenuko

Governor Alex Otti Orders Bridge Reconstruction

On Monday, Governor Alex Otti approved the long-overdue reconstruction of the dilapidated Omenuko Bridge in Arochukwu Local Government Area. The bridge, a vital connection between Abia North and Abia Central, has endangered commuters for decades. Its poor condition has created significant safety risks, prompting urgent government intervention.

Decades of Neglect and Safety Concerns

The narrow, aging structure has been a hazard, allowing only one vehicle to pass at a time. During the rainy season, floodwaters frequently submerge the bridge, worsening its safety issues due to its location at the base of a steep hill and sharp bend. Tragically, the bridge has been the site of multiple accidents, including fatalities involving students traveling for examinations.

Government Responds to Longstanding Promises

While addressing the media after the State Executive Council meeting, Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, emphasized the governor’s determination to fulfill promises ignored by previous administrations. “For decades, politicians have taken advantage of the bridge’s condition to make empty promises. His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, has now ordered its immediate reconstruction to benefit residents and commuters,” Kanu stated.

Project Launch and Expected Benefits

The government plans to announce the flag-off date for the project soon, underscoring its significance in improving transportation and boosting local economies. By addressing this critical infrastructure need, the reconstruction will foster connectivity between Abia North and Central regions, improving trade and travel for residents.

Abia’s Push for Energy Independence

In addition to the bridge reconstruction, the Abia State Government is advancing its plans for energy independence. The state has submitted the Abia State Electricity Bill to the aaHouse of Assembly, with a public hearing scheduled for December 18, 2024. Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, stated the bill will accelerate efforts to provide reliable electricity to all residents.
