Tension Escalates in Ekosodin

Incident Sparks Outrage and Retaliation

Tensions rose sharply on Tuesday in Ekosodin community, Benin City, following a fatal accident involving a tricycle driver and a wheelbarrow pusher. According to sources, the tricycle driver, believed to be an Ekosodin indigene, accidentally hit the “Aboki” wheelbarrow pusher, leading to his untimely death. Outraged by the incident, other “Aboki” residents reportedly mobilized, assaulted the tricycle driver, and handed him over to law enforcement.

Efforts to Calm the Situation Fail

In response to the growing unrest, Ekosodin indigenes and tricycle drivers gathered to discuss possible solutions to the crisis. They resolved to approach the “Aboki” dwellers and seek permission to retrieve the victim’s body for transfer to the morgue, hoping to de-escalate tensions. However, despite these efforts, the situation deteriorated further when the angry “Aboki” group reportedly stormed the meeting location. Armed with dangerous weapons, they attacked the indigenes and set fire to a bus meant for transportation.

Violence Spreads as Protests Erupt

Following the attack, Ekosodin indigenes reacted by launching protests across the community. Shops owned by “Aboki” dwellers were forcefully shut down, and protesters issued threats to evict the group from the area if they did not leave voluntarily. The situation remains volatile as both sides continue to exchange blame for the escalation. Eyewitnesses described the community as a “war zone” as tensions boiled over, spreading fear among residents.

Police Intervention Met with Hostility

Efforts by police officers to restore calm were reportedly unsuccessful, as the agitated “Aboki” dwellers allegedly turned their anger toward the law enforcement team. An eyewitness revealed that police officers were attacked, and their patrol van was vandalized during the chaos. The inability to contain the violence has raised concerns about the security situation in the community, with residents calling for urgent intervention from state authorities.

Community Leaders Seek Resolution

Local leaders are reportedly working behind the scenes to mediate between the warring factions and prevent further violence. Many fear that continued unrest could lead to loss of more lives and destruction of property. Calls have been made to the Edo State government and law enforcement agencies to step up their presence in Ekosodin to restore peace and order.

Developing Situation Amid Rising Tensions

At the time of reporting, all efforts to contact the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Moses Joel Yamu, were unsuccessful. Community members remain on edge as the situation continues to develop. Many hope that swift intervention will prevent further clashes and bring an end to the escalating crisis.
