Farotimi’s Defamation Trial: Afenifere Demands Immediate End

Pan-Yoruba Group Calls for Justice and Immediate Release of Human Rights Lawyer

Afenifere has called for the immediate halt of Dele Farotimi’s defamation trial, deeming it unjust and politically motivated. Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, condemned the prosecution and highlighted concerns over Farotimi’s arrest. The group criticized the lack of transparency in the legal proceedings surrounding Farotimi’s case.

Alleged External Influence in Farotimi’s Trial

Oba Olaitan, speaking to journalists in Lagos, expressed concern over the delay in granting Farotimi bail. He questioned the motivations behind the defamation case, suggesting external influences drove the prosecution. Afenifere’s leadership emphasized the trial’s lack of legal basis and demanded its swift dismissal to protect Farotimi’s rights and reputation.

The Legal and Procedural Concerns

One of the primary grievances voiced by Afenifere was the handling of Farotimi’s arrest. According to Olaitan, Farotimi was not booked or logged into any police station in Lagos, where the arrest took place. Instead, he was swiftly transported to Ado-Ekiti, bypassing standard legal procedures. This, Afenifere argued, violated police protocols and caused unnecessary emotional distress for both Farotimi and his family, who were left in the dark about his whereabouts.

Call for Police Accountability

Afenifere urged the Nigerian police to restore their integrity by ending what it called a miscarriage of justice. The group criticized transferring individuals between states without proper documentation or family notification, calling it “abduction.” Afenifere demanded the police follow standard procedures, ensuring transparency and respect for arrested individuals’ rights.

Farotimi’s Legal Battle and Allegations

Farotimi faced 16 counts of criminal defamation on December 4, 2024, following Afe Babalola’s complaint. The case alleges Farotimi defamed Babalola in his book, The Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. Many critics view the charges as an attempt to silence dissenting voices, questioning the motivations behind the legal action.

Afenifere’s Stance and Broader Implications

Afenifere’s call to end the prosecution is not only about securing justice for Farotimi but also a broader statement against perceived governmental overreach. The group emphasized the need for an independent judiciary and the protection of civil liberties, warning that failure to address these concerns could set a dangerous precedent for the protection of fundamental rights in the country.
