At Least Ten Dead in Devastating Error
The Nigerian Air Force mistakenly bombed two Sokoto villages, killing at least ten civilians and injuring many others. The airstrike hit Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, located in Silame Local Government Area near the infamous Surame Forest. This forest is a known hideout for bandits and the Lakurawa sect.
The strike, which happened early in the morning around 7 a.m., has sparked widespread outrage and grief, as residents were caught off guard during what should have been a peaceful holiday.
Eyewitnesses Recount the Horror
Local residents described the harrowing moments when bombs rained down on the villages. Malam Yahya, a survivor, recounted, “The villagers were sitting peacefully when the bombs started dropping. No fewer than ten people were killed, and several others sustained serious injuries.”
The chairman of Silame Local Government Area, Abubakar Daftarana, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “The villagers were innocent and peace-loving people with no criminal record. This is a devastating blow to our community. We are still assessing the full extent of the casualties and damages,” he said.
Military Defends Its Actions Amid Investigation
The Nigerian Air Force has pledged to investigate the incident thoroughly. According to NAF spokesperson Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence and aerial surveillance, which initially identified the area as a hub for militant activity.
“The airstrikes were conducted with precision based on intelligence from multiple sources. However, reports of harm to civilians are deeply concerning and will be investigated thoroughly,” Akinboyewa stated.
Joint Operation Leadership Speaks Out
Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullah, Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre for Operation Fansan Yamma, echoed Akinboyewa’s sentiments, emphasizing the military’s commitment to avoiding civilian casualties. He reiterated that the operation had been guided by stringent protocols to ensure precision.
“The targets struck near Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa were positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group,” Abdullah explained. “We urge the public to rely on verified information and understand the risks of disinformation by terrorist groups aiming to discredit military successes.”
Rising Concerns Over Civilian Safety
This tragic incident raises broader concerns about the safety of civilians in regions plagued by military operations. While the military continues its efforts to combat insurgents and criminal groups, the collateral damage underscores the urgent need for improved intelligence and operational accuracy.
Residents of the affected communities and rights organizations have called for accountability and compensation for the victims’ families, as well as measures to prevent such errors in the future.
Calls for Justice and Clarity
Community leaders and advocacy groups demand transparency and safeguards as the Nigerian Air Force investigates this devastating mistake. The incident highlights the critical balance needed in counterinsurgency efforts to protect civilians while combating threats effectively.
The Nigerian government faces mounting pressure to address these challenges while rebuilding trust with affected communities. The tragedy has left many questioning the protocols guiding military operations in volatile regions, sparking national and international attention.
