Weather Outlook for the Week
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts dust haze nationwide from December 30 to January 1, 2025. On Monday, moderate dust haze will affect the northern region, reducing visibility to 2-5 kilometers. NiMet’s official release predicts these weather conditions will persist across the country during the forecast period. The haze will be more intense in some areas, where local visibility could be reduced to less than 1 kilometer.
Impact on the North Central and Southern Regions
NiMet’s forecast further indicated that the North Central states would see moderate dust haze, also with a visibility range of 2 to 5 kilometers. Localized areas could experience even poorer visibility, measuring less than 1 kilometer. In contrast, the southern parts of the country are expected to encounter early morning mist or fog, followed by moderate dust haze throughout the day. The haze in the southern regions is predicted to have a visibility range of 2 to 5 kilometers.
Thick Dust Haze Predicted for Tuesday
By Tuesday, NiMet warns that the northern region will experience thick dust haze, significantly reducing visibility. The central region will also be affected by moderate dust haze, with visibility between 1 to 3 kilometers. In the southern regions, early morning mist or fog will persist, with moderate dust haze during the rest of the day, reducing visibility further to between 1 and 3 kilometers.
Wednesday’s Dust Haze Forecast
The weather pattern will persist into Wednesday, with thick dust haze anticipated in the northern and North Central regions. The southern areas will continue to face early morning mist or fog, followed by moderate dust haze, impacting visibility across the region. NiMet has cautioned residents to stay prepared for these conditions, which are expected to last throughout the week.
Health Precautions Advised
With dust particles suspended in the air, NiMet has urged Nigerians, especially those with respiratory conditions like asthma, to take necessary precautions. The agency emphasized the importance of wearing protective gear such as face masks, staying indoors when possible, and keeping windows closed to minimize exposure to the dust. Authorities also recommended that individuals in affected regions monitor updates from NiMet for any changes in the weather pattern.
Public Safety and Airline Operations
NiMet urged the public to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories, especially in relation to air travel. The agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to adjust their flight plans accordingly. Residents and travelers are encouraged to stay informed through NiMet’s official channels, including its website, to receive timely updates on the weather conditions.
