Former Governor Calls for Educational Reform
Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State governor and prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has emphasized the need to overhaul Nigeria’s education system. Speaking at his Ila-Orangun residence while hosting Ekiti State University (EKSU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Babatola Ayodele, Akande urged Nigerian universities to prioritize practical skills over theoretical learning. He stated, “Degrees without relevant skills add no value to the economy or national development.”
Focus on Skills for Economic Growth
Akande highlighted the importance of equipping graduates with the skills necessary for global competition. “Education is not just about earning degrees but learning how to work and contribute to economic growth,” he remarked. He criticized traditional curricula for producing graduates ill-prepared to meet the demands of a dynamic economy and called for reforms aligning academic programs with national development goals.

Commending EKSU for its achievements, including recognition as Nigeria’s best state university by Times Higher Education, Akande attributed this success to the institution’s progressive leadership. He praised the university for integrating vocational training into its curriculum, ensuring graduates possess practical skills for self-sufficiency and economic contribution.

Prof. Ayodele, the EKSU Vice-Chancellor, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to practical education. “Every student leaves with vocational skills, ensuring readiness for profitable engagements instead of pursuing white-collar jobs,” he stated.
