Telecom Operators Push for 100% Tariff Increase

Nigerian Telcos Submit Proposal to NCC

Nigerian telecommunications companies have formally requested a 100% increase in service tariffs, citing escalating operational costs. The proposal, submitted to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), underscores the urgent financial pressures faced by the sector. Rising inflation, fluctuating exchange rates, and soaring energy costs have significantly impacted service delivery expenses.

Karl Toriola, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, disclosed the proposal during an interview on Arise TV. He emphasized the necessity of the increase for the industry’s sustainability. However, he acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding NCC’s decision, given its sensitivity to the current economic realities.

Industry Under Financial Strain

Toriola highlighted the industry’s challenges, stating that many telecom operators struggle to maintain profitability under current tariffs. “The proposed tariff hike aims to ensure long-term industry sustainability rather than short-term gains,” he said. He also stressed that the telecom sector’s stability is critical to Nigeria’s broader economic well-being.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) echoed these concerns. Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON’s Chairman, described the sector as being “under siege” due to inflation, energy costs, and unstable exchange rates. Operators warned that without immediate adjustments, service disruptions and reduced network expansion are inevitable.

Call for Collaborative Solutions

Telecom stakeholders, including ALTON and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, have urged the Federal Government to convene a dialogue with industry leaders. In a joint statement, they called for a balanced framework that considers consumer affordability while addressing operators’ financial sustainability.

The associations noted that tariffs have remained unchanged for 11 years, despite mounting operational costs. They stressed the need for urgent intervention to avert the collapse of one of Nigeria’s most vital industries.

Concerns Over Consumer Impact

While operators advocate for tariff adjustments, the proposal has drawn mixed reactions from consumers and advocacy groups. Many fear that a 100% increase could make telecom services unaffordable for a significant portion of the population.

Despite these concerns, Toriola expressed optimism about achieving a resolution that aligns with stakeholders’ interests. He emphasized that all parties share a commitment to preserving the sector’s future while safeguarding consumer rights.

Future of Nigeria’s Telecom Sector

As the NCC reviews the proposal, telecom operators awaits a decision that could shape its trajectory. Operators remain hopeful that regulators will prioritize the sector’s sustainability, ensuring continued investment and service quality. However, the need for a balanced approach that mitigates consumer impact remains paramount.
