Violence Erupts in Unguwar Rogo
In the early hours of New Year’s Day, gunmen launched a devastating assault on the Unguwar Rogo community in Maro Ward, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The attackers targeted homes, looted properties, and set buildings ablaze, leaving behind a trail of destruction and fear.
Church and Homes Reduced to Ashes
Among the structures destroyed was the ECWA Church, which was vandalised and looted before being set on fire. The pastorium and other church properties were also burned, according to Ishaya Onussim, Chairman of the Ugom Progressive Union. The assailants also torched six homes, forcing all residents to flee into the surrounding bushes for safety.
Residents Abandon Belongings Amid Chaos
As the attack unfolded, terrified residents left their belongings behind in a desperate bid to save their lives. Onussim expressed dismay over the repeated assaults on the community, lamenting the lack of effective measures to address the growing insecurity.
Witnesses Report Persistent Threats
Zamani Ishaku, a local resident, confirmed the attack and highlighted the area’s long history of violence by armed groups. He called for stronger security measures to protect the community, which has faced frequent raids over the years.
Similar Attacks in Plateau State
The violence in Kaduna echoes a recent tragedy in Plateau State, where armed assailants killed 15 people in Gidan Ado, Riyom Local Government Area, despite heightened security efforts. Such attacks during festive seasons have become alarmingly common in the region, raising questions about the effectiveness of current security strategies.
Growing Concerns Over Regional Insecurity
The Unguwar Rogo attack has once again drawn attention to the worsening security situation in northern Nigeria. Community leaders and residents are urging authorities to take immediate and decisive action to protect vulnerable populations and prevent further loss of life and property.
