Fleeing Bandits Relocating to Oyo, Makinde Warns

Governor Alerts Residents on Bandit Migration

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has raised alarm over bandits fleeing military offensives relocating to the North-West into the state. Speaking during the 2025 annual inter-faith service for state workers in Ibadan, Makinde assured citizens of proactive measures to ensure their safety.

“Security challenges in 2024 were significant, including armed robberies and kidnappings,” Makinde said. “Now, bandits displaced by military heat in the North-West are attempting to relocate here, but we are ready to act decisively.”

Military Pressure Forcing Criminal Migration

Makinde explained that intensified military operations, including aerial bombardments of hideouts in the North-West, have displaced many criminals. These individuals, he revealed, are now seeking refuge in other states, including Oyo.

“During a security briefing, I learned that some bandits have moved into our territory due to increased military pressure in their regions. Let me assure everyone that Oyo State will not be a haven for them,” he declared.

Makinde Recounts Personal Encounter

Highlighting the severity of the situation, Makinde shared a personal experience during his recent birthday retreat in Fashola. “Bandits had camped less than two kilometers from where I stayed,” he recounted. This close call underscored the urgency of addressing the security threats.

He also commended security agencies for their commitment to protecting the state and called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Call to Action for Traditional Rulers and Citizens

The governor urged traditional rulers and citizens to collaborate with security agencies by providing intelligence. “To our traditional rulers and all residents, this is no joke. If you notice anything unusual, report it immediately. We will not relent until Oyo State is safe for everyone,” he vowed.

Makinde reiterated his commitment to prioritizing security, pledging that no stone would be left unturned in the fight against criminal elements.

Tragic School Stampede Addressed

In addressing other safety concerns, Makinde promised justice for the victims of the recent Islamic High School stampede in Bashorun, which claimed 35 lives. He criticized inaction in similar cases in other states, emphasizing that Oyo would set a precedent for accountability.

“While suspects may receive bail pending trial, the judicial process will not be hindered. Justice will be served to prevent future tragedies,” he affirmed.

Pledges to Workers and Pensioners

Makinde also reassured workers and pensioners of his administration’s commitment to their welfare. He announced ongoing efforts to finalize minimum wage negotiations for pensioners and resolve outstanding arrears.

With goodwill messages from state officials praising his dedication, Makinde urged civil servants to remain diligent, promising to maintain momentum on reforms and policies that benefit the state’s workforce.
