Super Eagles Coach: NFF Announces Éric Chelle as Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The NFF Executive Committee confirmed the decision on January 7, 2025, after the Technical Sub-Committee’s recommendation. Chelle, 47, brings vast experience, having coached Mali’s national team and various clubs across Europe and North Africa.

Chelle’s Impressive Coaching Career

Chelle, who was born in Côte d’Ivoire to a French father and a Malian mother, has an extensive background in both playing and coaching. He played professionally in France, representing clubs like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, and others. Internationally, he earned five caps for Mali. As a coach, Chelle led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), narrowly missing a semi-final spot in a heartbreaking extra-time loss to the eventual champions. His coaching tenure from 2022 to 2024 saw Mali secure 14 wins, five draws, and only three losses.

Super Eagles’ Need for Stability

Finidi George resigned after disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, leaving the Super Eagles’ coaching role vacant. The NFF initially sought Bruno Labbadia, but the German coach turned down the offer. This paved the way for Chelle, who is now expected to stabilize the team and restore their momentum.

Chelle’s First Task: World Cup Qualification

Chelle’s immediate challenge will be to secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles face crucial qualifiers in March, with the upcoming Matchdays five and six expected to determine their fate in the race for a spot in the global tournament. Chelle will need to quickly assess the squad, motivate the players, and put in place a winning strategy to ensure the team performs at its best.

Chelle’s Vision for the Super Eagles

Chelle aims to bring fresh perspective to the Super Eagles, combining tactical discipline with Nigeria’s signature flair. His success leading Mali with limited resources proves his ability to maximize player potential. Chelle’s African football experience will help the Super Eagles adapt and perform in international competitions.

Looking Ahead: A New Era for Nigerian Football

Chelle’s appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Nigerian football. The NFF is hopeful that under Chelle’s leadership, the Super Eagles will return to their winning ways and make a strong push for the 2026 World Cup. Football fans across the nation are eagerly awaiting the first steps of this promising journey, hoping that Chelle’s expertise will guide the team to success and restore their place among Africa’s footballing elites.
