FCCPC Urges Telecom Operators to Improve Services After Tariff Increase

Tariff Hike Linked to Service Quality Enhancements

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on telecommunications operators in Nigeria to improve service delivery following a recently approved 50% tariff increase by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FCCPC acknowledged the financial challenges faced by operators but emphasized that consumers’ interests must remain the priority.

“We unequivocally state that consumer interests remain paramount,” the FCCPC declared, urging that the tariff hike lead to noticeable enhancements in network reliability, speed, and customer service.

Balancing Operational Costs with Consumer Protection

The NCC’s approval of the tariff adjustment was accompanied by assurances that the increase was far lower than the over 100% initially requested by telecom operators. The FCCPC commended the NCC’s deliberate approach in ensuring the hike was tied to measurable improvements in service quality, adding that the adjustment aims to alleviate financial burdens on consumers.

To ensure transparency, telecom operators are now required to provide detailed disclosures about their tariff plans, including costs, validity periods, and associated benefits. “Consumers should no longer have to worry about hidden charges or unexpected costs,” the FCCPC emphasized.

Addressing Longstanding Consumer Concerns

The FCCPC noted that Nigerian telecom users have consistently expressed dissatisfaction with issues such as network congestion, dropped calls, inconsistent internet speeds, and inadequate customer service. The commission stressed that any increase in tariffs must result in tangible service enhancements to address these grievances.

“Tariff adjustments must directly translate into demonstrable and tangible service improvements,” the FCCPC reiterated.

Strengthening Oversight and Accountability

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the FCCPC and NCC reaffirms their joint commitment to consumer protection and fair competition in the telecom sector. The agreement ensures that regulatory or pricing adjustments are balanced with consumer interests and that operators allocate revenue from tariff hikes to infrastructure development and service delivery improvements.

Monitoring and Communication Measures

The FCCPC called for robust mechanisms to monitor how telecom operators utilize additional revenue from the tariff increase. “Operators must clearly communicate the rationale for these adjustments to consumers, ensuring transparency and alignment with efforts to enhance service delivery and infrastructure,” the commission stated.

With these measures in place, the FCCPC aims to protect consumers while addressing the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
