Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed the APC administration’s commitment to tackling corruption, boosting security, and revitalizing the economy. Addressing a national democracy conference in Abuja, Shettima emphasized these priorities on Monday. His Special Adviser, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, conveyed the Vice President’s dedication to judicial independence and national progress.

He acknowledged Nigeria’s complex democratic challenges, promising that the government remains resolute in fulfilling its campaign promises. “The administration is fully committed to charting a course that delivers meaningful progress for all Nigerians,” Shettima emphasized.

Criticism Over Expenditure on VP Residence

Shettima’s remarks come under scrutiny, as the government faces backlash for allocating significant funds to renovate the Vice Presidential residence amidst widespread economic difficulties. Critics have called the expenditure tone-deaf, arguing that it reflects misplaced priorities in a nation grappling with inflation and unemployment.

“While Nigerians are struggling with daily hardships, spending on such political infrastructure raises questions about the government’s focus,” a political analyst noted.

Insecurity in Borno Sparks Concern

Recent killings in Borno State, Shettima’s home state, have further cast doubt on the administration’s ability to address insecurity. Despite promises to end insurgency and secure lives, many Nigerians remain skeptical about the government’s capacity to achieve these goals. The event brought together stakeholders to deliberate on ways to fortify democratic institutions and practices in Nigeria.
