Abia Abolishes School Levies, Implements New Policies

Governor Alex Otti Ends PTA Levies in Schools

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has abolished all forms of payments in primary and secondary schools across the state, including PTA levies. In his New Year address, Otti stressed his administration’s commitment to providing free and inclusive education. “No parent or guardian should be burdened with payments for their children’s education in public schools,” he declared.

Financial Support for Schools Introduced

To ensure schools function smoothly, Otti announced the introduction of an imprest account system. Under this system, school headteachers and principals will receive monthly funds to cover operational costs. “There will be no justification for extortion or denying any child the opportunity to learn,” Otti said, warning of strict enforcement against defaulters.

Prioritizing Developmental Goals

The governor outlined his administration’s plans for 2025, focusing on building sustainable systems and infrastructure. He emphasized channeling public resources to areas with the highest social and economic impact. “We aim to fulfill the aspirations of the people by addressing the needs of the less privileged and realigning governance priorities,” Otti explained.

Increased Focus on Education and Health

Otti revealed that 35% of the state’s budget would be allocated to education and health sectors to accelerate Abia’s development. He emphasized transforming schools into centers of excellence and enforcing compulsory attendance for all school-age children. “Starting this term, it is unlawful for any child to be outside school during school hours,” he announced.

Ensuring Public Safety and Economic Growth

In addition to education reforms, Otti warned against threats to public safety and pledged to act decisively against any group jeopardizing peace. He also highlighted plans to make Abia more attractive to investors by improving social infrastructure and streamlining business operations.
