Governor Alex Otti Reorganizes State Executive Council
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has made significant changes to his cabinet, assigning portfolios to newly appointed commissioners and redeploying others. The reshuffle, which took place on Thursday, follows the swearing-in of the new commissioners on Wednesday. Governor Otti had previously announced his intention to make adjustments to his cabinet, including the creation of new ministries to better address the state’s needs.
New Ministries and Reassigned Roles
The cabinet reorganization established several new ministries and carved out others from existing ones. Governor Otti reassigned Mike Akpara, formerly the Commissioner of Finance, to head the Ministry of Industry and SMEs. Additionally, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, who previously served as the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, was moved to the Ministry of Transport, aligning with the governor’s strategy to enhance governance efficiency.
Key Positions and Retained Roles
The reshuffle also saw the retention of key figures in their previous roles. Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna continues as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, while Mr. Uwaoma Ukandu takes over as the new Commissioner for Finance. Other notable appointments include Mr. Kingsley Anosike as Commissioner for Budget and Planning, and Mr. Okey Kanu as Commissioner for Information, ensuring continuity in critical areas of the state’s administration.
Focus on Education, Health, and Social Welfare
The newly composed cabinet emphasizes sectors crucial to the state’s development. Governor Otti appointed Mr. Goodluck Ubochi as Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, while Prof. Uche Uche and Prof. Enoch Uche were assigned to oversee Tertiary Education and Health, respectively. Additionally, Dr. Maureen Aghukwa takes on the role of Commissioner for Women Affairs, and Mrs. Blessing Felix will lead the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, underscoring the government’s commitment to social welfare.
Infrastructure and Economic Development
Governor Otti’s cabinet reshuffle also highlights a strong focus on infrastructure and economic growth. Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije has been appointed Commissioner for Lands and Housing, and Engr. Don Otumchere Oti will lead the Ministry of Works. Engr. Ikechukwu Monday has been tasked with overseeing the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, while Comrade Sunny A. Onwuma takes charge as Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, signaling a comprehensive approach to the state’s economic development.
