Abia Postpones School Resumption to September 23

The Abia State government has postponed the resumption of schools for the 2024/2025 academic session to Wednesday, September 23, 2024. This decision, announced by the State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, came after a public holiday on September 16 disrupted the original school calendar. The announcement followed a similar postponement in Edo and Kano states.

Training for Teachers to Continue

As part of the state’s effort to improve education, the government has continued its teachers’ training programme. The second phase of the training, which involves 1,800 master trainers, began on September 11 and will run until September 20. According to Kanu, this initiative is part of a larger agenda to elevate the quality of education in the state.

Commitment to Repositioning Education

Governor Alex Otti’s strategy to transform Abia’s education sector includes a vital training programme for teachers. The commissioner highlighted that the government has successfully trained 200 teachers so far. The programme aims to equip all educators with essential modern teaching techniques. This commitment reflects the state’s broader efforts to improve educational standards. The training is taking place in three locations: Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia zones.

Abia’s Participation in International Symposium

The state has been selected by the World Bank and the Federal Government of Nigeria to participate in an international medical symposium in Ghana, titled Human Capital Opportunity for Prosperity and Equity. The symposium aims to improve healthcare systems in participating regions, which ties into Abia’s broader human capital development goals.

Light-Up Abia Initiative Expands

The state’s Light-Up Abia initiative, which focuses on installing solar panels across the state, is progressing steadily. The state government has installed over 4,300 solar panels across 86 locations, enhancing security and comfort for residents. They will soon extend the initiative, originally focused on Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, to other towns and cities in the state.

Abia State Electricity Bill Nears Approval

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utility, Mr Ikechukwu Monday, revealed that the Abia State Electricity Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Assembly. Once enacted, the bill will establish the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority and the Abia State Rural Electrification Agency. This legislative move is designed to modernise energy generation, with a focus on renewable energy sources.
