Abia Soldiers Killing: LP Urges Military Assault on Killers Alone

Call for Precision

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, on Sunday, the Party urged the Nigerian Army to focus solely on apprehending those responsible for the killing of five soldiers deployed to Abia State, during the Biafran Day celebration. The party emphasized the need to avoid harming innocent citizens in the process.

The military had earlier confirmed the killing of the soldiers during the sit-at-home protest organized by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the South-East.

Military’s Pledge

Though the military vowed to retaliate against the perpetrators, however, the Labour Party cautioned that any military action should be directed strictly at those responsible, to prevent collateral damage to law-abiding citizens.

Support for State Government

The Labour Party commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for offering a N25 million bounty for information leading to the capture of the criminals. The party highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and order in the state.

Appeal for Professionalism

Ifoh expressed condolences to the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, and urged the military to exercise professionalism in their response. He stressed the importance of measured actions to avoid exacerbating tensions and causing unnecessary loss of life.

Preventing Humanitarian Crisis

The Labour Party warned that indiscriminate military retaliation could lead to a humanitarian crisis. Reports indicated that fear of military action was already causing people to flee their homes in Aba. The party called for a focused approach to ensure the safety of innocent citizens while bringing the perpetrators to justice.
