Abia State Governor Alex Otti welcomed Engr. Dave Umahi, the Honourable Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, for a pivotal meeting focused on the progress of federal road projects in Abia State. The meeting served as an in-depth platform to review timelines and key milestones for these crucial infrastructure developments.
A Comprehensive Overview of Road Projects in Abia State
During the meeting, the Minister informed the Governor that there are about 11 federal road projects ongoing in Abia State. Some of the roads he mentioned are:
- Section One of the Port Harcourt-Enugu Express Road, which runs from Lokpanta to Abia Tower in Umuahia, is now 100% completed, including a trailer park.
- Section Two of the road runs from Umuahia Tower to Aba, and is still under construction.
- The rehabilitation of Umuahia-Ikwuano to Ikot Ekpene-Umudike Road, spanning 49.2 kilometres.
- A section of the Nkporo-Abiriba-Ohafia Road awarded in 2012 but has since been abandoned.
- The Bende-Ohafia-Arochukwu section one awarded in 2018 but has since been abandoned.
- The Aba-Owerri Road awarded in 2020, among others.
Call for Abia State Government Assistance
Minister Umahi also sought the state government’s help in resolving issues related to the construction of a trailer park in Aro Ngwa Aba.
Commitment to Partnership
Governor Otti expressed the state’s willingness to collaborate with the federal government to tackle the degradation of several federal roads in Abia, particularly the Port-Harcourt-Aba and the Umuahia-Bende-Abiriba-Ohafia-Arochukwu roads, which have languished in neglect and disrepair.
The meeting was a productive one and both parties agreed to work together to ensure that the ongoing federal road projects in Abia State are completed as soon as possible.
