Abia State to Settle Salaries of Unpaid Tertiary Workers

Abia’s Commitment to Education

On 23rd July 2024, the government of Abia State announced a decisive move to settle the backlog of unpaid salaries at various tertiary institutions, a lingering issue from past administrations. The estimated sum owed amounts to 18 billion Naira. Governor Alex Otti’s initiative highlights commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and academic staff welfare.

Government’s Action Plan

At a press briefing, Commissioner Prince Okey Kanu detailed the government’s strategy to tackle existing financial challenges. Starting in August, the government will disburse 1.5 billion Naira monthly over a 12-month period. This strategic approach not only aims to clear all outstanding debts but also stabilizes the financial management of tertiary institutions in the state.

Efforts to Enhance Staff Welfare

In a key meeting with ABSU’s Vice Chancellor and Governing Council, Governor Otti reiterated his commitment to staff welfare. He ordered the immediate release of funds to settle all outstanding salaries, even for unverified staff, within the next week. This swift measure is part of a larger initiative to address financial issues without impacting educational operations. These actions demonstrate a proactive approach to stabilizing the financial health of the educational sector.

Focus on Security and Efficiency

Furthermore, the state government has taken significant steps towards enhancing security and operational efficiency within educational institutions. The Senior Special Adviser on Homeland Security is coordinating with the Ministry of Education to deploy security in all public schools. This ensures the safety of students and protects the state’s educational investments.

Governor Otti’s administration is making a notable difference by prioritizing the welfare of educational staff and securing educational facilities. These efforts are crucial for fostering a conducive learning environment and signify a strong departure from the past administration’s approach.
