The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) introduced a regional passport to boost the free movement of people and goods. Starting January 29, 2025, the new passports will strengthen connectivity among AES member countries, including Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Citizens holding old ECOWAS passports can continue using them until they expire, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system.
AES’s Commitment to Regional Integration
This passport introduction follows the AES’s strategic decision to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Despite the withdrawal, the AES remains committed to ensuring seamless travel for both its citizens and ECOWAS nationals. Key Developments from the Bamako Meeting
At the AES ministerial meeting in Bamako on January 16, 2025, officials decided to establish a Regional Investment Bank. This new bank will finance infrastructure projects to boost regional connectivity and economic growth in AES member states. It will play a key role in enhancing self-sufficiency and strengthening ties within the confederation.
Reaffirming African Solidarity Amidst Changes
Despite the political shifts following its exit from ECOWAS, AES continues to prioritize African unity. Army General Assimi Goïta, President of the Malian Transition and head of the AES, expressed the group’s commitment to maintaining open borders and regional cooperation.
