AFCON 2025 qualifiers: Super Eagles Held Goalless by Rwanda

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a goalless draw in Kigali during their second AFCON 2025 qualifier against Rwanda. Despite dominating large portions of the game, Nigeria struggled to break down a resilient Rwandan defence, leaving both teams with a point. The result leaves Nigeria with work to do in their upcoming matches as they chase qualification.

Nigeria Denied Early Lead

In the 23rd minute, Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman believed he had given the Super Eagles the lead after a well-taken goal. However, the goal was controversially ruled out due to a foul in the buildup, which sparked debate over the officiating. Many believed the decision to disallow the goal was harsh, with replays offering conflicting views on the incident.

Rwandan Defence Stands Strong

Rwanda’s disciplined defence made it difficult for Nigeria to find the back of the net throughout the game. Despite controlling much of the possession and creating several chances, Nigeria failed to capitalise. The Rwandan backline, led by goalkeeper Olivier Kwizera, stayed resolute, repeatedly frustrating the Nigerian attackers.

Chukwueze and Bizimana Booked in Feisty Encounter

The match saw its fair share of physical battles, with Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze and Rwanda’s Djihad Bizimana both receiving yellow cards after a heated challenge in the first half. While Nigeria had more shots on target, Rwanda matched them in aggression and organisation, ensuring the Super Eagles could not find a breakthrough.

Nigeria’s Defence Holds Firm

Nigeria’s backline had a relatively quiet evening, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali securing his second consecutive clean sheet in the qualifiers. Ola Aina, however, faced challenges on the left flank as Rwanda’s forwards tested Nigeria’s defence at intervals. Despite these occasional threats, Nigeria managed to hold their own defensively.

With four points from their first two matches, Nigeria now finds themselves trailing behind Rwanda in the standings. The Super Eagles will need to regain their clinical edge in front of goal as they look ahead to the next round of qualifiers. Their inability to finish chances in Kigali has raised concerns about their attacking efficiency.
