Akwa Ibom’s N1.3B Fence and N20B Jet Maintenance

Budget Allocation Sparks Controversy

The Akwa Ibom State Government faces backlash for allocating N1.3 billion to build a fence around Unity Park. This allocation, part of the N955 billion 2025 budget, marks a sharp increase. In 2023, only N40 million was allocated for the project. Critics argue that such an extravagant amount for fencing highlights misplaced priorities, especially when critical public infrastructure remains underfunded.

Drastic Budget Increase Raises Questions

The state’s financial blueprint also includes N3.15 billion for the full development of Unity Park, featuring an amphitheater, VIP lounge, and public restrooms. However, with the fence alone costing N1.3 billion, concerns have grown over the transparency and justification of the spending. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong described the allocation as “criminal,” questioning why such sums are directed at non-essential projects instead of hospitals and schools.

Citizens Demand Accountability

Nigerians have taken to social media to express outrage, condemning the government’s spending priorities amid economic hardship. Many believe that the massive budget hike is an avenue for misappropriation, with some suggesting the funds could be better used to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Effiong further accused the government of possible money laundering, pointing to the questionable nature of the inflated costs.

Luxury Spending Amid Economic Struggles

The controversy extends beyond the Unity Park fence, as additional budget allocations have raised eyebrows. The government increased the cost of maintaining the Governor’s private jet from N8 billion to N20 billion, a move widely criticized as extravagant. Other questionable increases include N1.9 billion for 19 ambulances, N3.06 billion for 18 new buses, and a hike in special event expenses from N500 million to N1.5 billion.

Security and Public Welfare Overlooked

Amid these spending spikes, the budget for security equipment under the Ibom Community Watch program has also risen dramatically, jumping from N1 billion to N7 billion. While security concerns remain pressing in the state, many argue that funds should be directed toward initiatives that directly improve citizens’ daily lives. The widening gap between public needs and government expenditure continues to fuel debates on fiscal responsibility and governance in Akwa Ibom.

Growing Calls for Budget Review

With public anger mounting, calls for a review of the budget allocations have intensified. Activists and citizens demand greater transparency and accountability, urging state lawmakers to reassess expenditures that prioritize luxury over essential services. As scrutiny deepens, the government faces increasing pressure to justify its financial decisions or risk further erosion of public trust.
