Politicians Use Power for Personal Gain, Says Amaechi
Former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused Nigerian politicians of prioritizing personal enrichment and power retention over governance. Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, Amaechi claimed that the political elite manipulate the system to maintain control, often resorting to unethical practices. He warned that without active citizen engagement, politicians would continue to exploit the country’s governance structures.
Citizens Enabling Political Corruption
Amaechi argued that Nigerians unknowingly enable corrupt politicians by failing to hold them accountable. “People celebrate mediocrity, allowing politicians to evade scrutiny despite their failures,” he stated. He emphasized that the electorate’s short memory and passive acceptance of political wrongdoing embolden politicians to act without consequences. According to him, this culture of impunity allows leaders to commit offenses without fear of repercussions.
Direct Criticism of Tinubu’s Leadership
Amaechi directly criticized President Bola Tinubu, asserting that his leadership would not alter Nigeria’s entrenched political system. He argued that politicians tightly control power and will not willingly surrender it to reformists. Emphasizing his skepticism, he warned that expecting change from within the system is futile.
A Reflection on His Political Journey
Reflecting on his own experience, Amaechi disclosed that poverty pushed him into politics after graduating in 1987. He highlighted how his long-standing involvement in governance has made him a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. Despite his criticisms, he acknowledged his role in shaping the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its electoral victories, emphasizing that history could not ignore his contributions.
Paid Political Support and Election Manipulation
Amaechi also shed light on the transactional nature of political rallies, revealing that many attendees are paid to show support. Citing an experience in Lagos, he recounted how individuals admitted they would switch allegiances if offered better financial incentives. He described a past APC demonstration where funds were allocated to mobilize women, only for them to show up wearing campaign materials supporting a different candidate.
Call for Democratic Reform
Amaechi’s speech has reignited conversations about the need for electoral and governance reforms in Nigeria. His remarks have drawn mixed reactions, with some praising his honesty while others criticize him for being part of the system he condemns. As political discussions intensify, his revelations may push for stronger accountability measures and increased public awareness ahead of future elections.
